The Best Pizza in Verona – MUST TRY Pizzerias

Above the fashion, the romance, the Roman Empire, the espresso, the sports cars, and everything else Italian, Pizza is one of it’s primary cultural exports that has shaped the world. And when anyone travels to Italy, eating the best pizza is at the top of their lists. So it’s no surprise to us that you’re looking for the best pizza in Verona, and you happen to be in luck, because Verona is a city with fantastic pizza.

Verona may not be known for it’s pizza like Naples may be, but that doesn’t mean it’s any slouch either. In fact, in this list of the 18 best pizzas in Italy, two of them are in Verona. And one of those is the #5 pizza place in the world. So don’t worry, you’re going to eat some great pizza while you’re here.

Saporè Downtown

Let’s start out with an absolute banger, Saporè Downtown is (in our opinion) the best pizzaria on this list for traditional Italian pizza. And you shouldn’t expect anything different, because it’s one of Renato Bosco‘s restaurants, who literally considers himself a “pizza researcher”. It’s hard to get more devoted to pizza than that, and it absolutely shows. Even the owners of other great pizzarias like Matteo Aloe will give credit where credits due, and have said “Renato Bosco never get’s it wrong”. Pretty high praise!

And all the high praise is well deserved. In the several times we’ve been to Saporè Downtown together (and once by myself), we’ve never had a bad experience. From “appertivi” to the “dolci” at the end, Saporè Downtown takes great care of everything they serve. If we had to call out one thing specifically though that sets them apart, it’s the dough that they’re the most famous for. In America pizza dough and crust is the afterthought to the toppings. At Saporè Downtown, it’s the critical foundation of a solid pizza.

Also, they’re conveniently located in the historic district, so they’ll be close to everything you’re doing here in Verona! And if you’re looking for something to do, you can even attend a cooking class hosted and taught by Reneto himself, which makes for a great Italian experience you can take home with you and benefit from forever.

Berberè

Remember Matteo Aloe giving compliments to Saporè Downtown? Well, those compliments only hold weight because he has a fantastic pizzeria of his own. Berberè was started by Matteo and his brother in 2010 in Bologna, and now has 18 different locations in Italy, as well as two in London. So to say their pizza has a following would be an understatement. Berberè gets a little more adventurous with their pizzas, and they certainly branch out of the traditional style (mostly with seasonal pizzas). While some are not our taste (sorry, but any pizza with anchovies is not for us), the ones we’ve have tried have been delicious.

Also, it’s worth noting that Berberè made this list after we tried it with a fair amount of skepticism. Why is that? Well, we’re naturally wary of the quality of food at any chain, and especially one located in a main tourist area like Piazze Erbe. However, we were absolutely wrong to judge in this instance, because Berberè is a great pizza spot thats located in a perfect area, and priced very well. So, pretty much everything you could want when you’re in the middle of a busy day of sightseeing looking for the best pizza in Verona! We highly recommend.

I Tigli

I Tigli is a Michelin rated pizzeria that’s also the #5 pizzeria in the world that we mentioned above. So why is it not #1 on this list? Well, for starters, it’s not actually in Verona, it’s outside of it. Second, the pizza can get very non-traditional. So while it’s only about half an hour away, when you’re looking for the best pizza in Verona, this might not be the spot for you. At the same time though, it’s the #5 rated pizza in the world, so how can we not include it?!

We’ve been to I Tigli just once, and it’s certainly an experience worth having. The pizzas are a bit more expensive than the standardish €12,00 you might expect for a margherita or diovala in Italy… these pizzas might run you €30,00 for a personal size pizza. But, we can’t deny that it’s money well spent. I Tigli is a masterclass in a modern pizza. If you make the journey to San Bonifacio to visit I Tigli, do yourself a favor and don’t order off the “Classici” menu, go for something adventerous!

Du De Cope

A close second for our favorite pizza in Verona, Du De Cope has fantastic pizza from their classics to their more adventurous pies. And, it’s located right in the middle of everything, right in between Piazza della Erbe, and the Ponte della Vittoria. And this year marks it’s 20th year open, as they opened in 2004, so they’re clearly doing something right. They have three different types of dough (all of which they let rise for 72 hours), and the rest of their ingredients are high quality as well. If you’ve been there, it’s worth going back, as they have a few different pizzas that rotate based off seasonality of the ingredients.

Make no mistake, being in such a popular area, you’re going to be eating with a lot of tourists. But, this isn’t a tourist trap with high prices and bad food. No, Du De Cope legitimately has some of the best pizza in Verona without doubt. It’s got a nice interior with a good atmosphere, but we always prefer eating outside on the few tables they have out front.

Pizzeria Da Salvatore

Just across the Ponte Nuovo bridge from Citta Antica (the Historic City), Pizzeria da Salvatore has been open since 1961, and in it’s current location since 2000. So, it goes without saying that Pizzeria da Salvatore is a long time staple in the best Verona pizza and pizzerias. Inside the walls and entire restaurant are adorned with art, with each table being a unique work in itself. Much of the art along the back wall is an homage to other Italians as well. Just for this reason alone, it’s worth the walk. This is a treasured local eatery, and you’re unlikely to run into a ton of tourists here.

Of course, is it worth going if the pizza isn’t great though? Of course not. And luckily, the pizza doesn’t disappoint. For starters, it’s a few euros cheaper than other more popular eateries in the more touristy areas. And second, the pizza is great. Finally, you’ll be right there in the Veronetta Neighborhood, one of our favorite to explore in Verona!

Honorable Mentions: Other Good Verona Pizzerias

Of course, it’s impossible to sum up all the best pizza in Verona by just giving you our 5 favorite pizza spots (or in one article for that matter), so we wanted to give you a few honorable mentions that may be closer to where you’re staying or what you’re doing. But whether you choose a restaurant off this article or not, Verona is a city with great food, and any pizzeria you choose outside of the tourist areas (and even some within them), will probably have great authentic Italian pizza!

Il Piccolo Coloniale alla Torre

Just a few steps south of the Verona Arena, Il Piccolo Coloniale alla Torre is a cute hole in the wall pizzeria with fresh pizzas already made to grab a slice from. There’s no website or active social media for us to link you to, so you’ll just have to trust us on this one. But if you’re in the mood for variety and to grab a bunch of different slices rather than one single pizza to yourself, this is the spot we recommend!

Pizzeria Guglielmo & Enrico Vuolo

A pizzeria that touts itself as an authentic Neapolitan restaurant in Verona is obviously a must try. The Vuolo’s are 5th generation pizza chefs, and you can tell pizza is in their blood once you’re eating there. The Pizzeria Guglielmo & Enrico Vuolo boasts 3 Gambero Rosso awards, and while it’s located a short drive from the historic center in a residential district, it’s worth the drive. Plus, you’ll be eating amongst Italians rather than tourists!
