New Tourist Tax Structure in Verona

A few weeks ago we shared a story with you about the Municipality of Verona cracking down on hotels and Air BnB owners for tourism tax violations. And it was a good crackdown. It’s not that the businesses weren’t charging tourists the tax, it’s that they were collecting the tax and still just keeping it for themselves. This leaves Veronas tourism board with a smaller operating budget, and makes it less effective.

Now Verona has announced new tourist tax regulations and rates designed to encourage visitors to stay longer in the city. Starting on July 1st, 2024, the cap on the tourist tax for overnight stays will be reduced from 5 days, to 4 days. The new 4-day limit will also include switching establishments, and applies for stays up to 30 days. So if you’re staying in a few hotels around the city during your stay, your tax won’t start over.

Another change to the city stay tax is a new software called…. Wait for it… “TouristTax”. All lodging establishments (Hotels, Hostels, Air BnBs, etc) must register in it, and once confirmed by the Tourist Tax Office, the businesses will gain access to the Public Digital Identity System.

How Much will Tourist Tax in Verona be Now?

There’s a few different rates depending on the type of establishment, and also the cost. So, staying at a campsite is going to be cheaper than 5 star hotel in the city center. Makes sense. Here’s the categories:

  • Hotels & Hostels: The new rate will be between 1.50 and 5 euros.
  • Bed & Breakfasts: The new rate is between 2 and 5 euros.
  • Air BnBs (Short Term Rentals): The new rate is a flat 3.50 euros.

There’s also special rate discounts. From now on, visitors over 70 years old, younger people between 15 & 25, and groups of over 25 people will all pay a rate 20% less than standard.
