Ammazza Caffé Review: Craft Tonics & Specialty Coffee

If you’ve read our guide on where to find free WiFi in Verona for remote work, you already know that I’m a fan of Ammazza Caffé for getting a little work done while I have a coffee. However, just because a place that serves coffee makes a great spot to get some remote work done, does NOT mean it’s actually a great coffee shop. Just ask Starbucks! So I wanted to give a little more in-depth review of the Ammazza Caffé in Verona, what it offers, and what it doesn’t.

The Coffee at Ammazza Caffé

First things first, how is the coffee? And we’re happy to say that it is fantastic! My drink of choice is a cappuccino in the morning (we’re in Italy, what else would I want?), and a macchiatto after lunch. My wife typically likes straight espresso for both morning and afternoon, but she’ll add a black drip coffee on in the morning.

And one of the best things about coffee at Ammazza Caffé is that they have so much variety. While it’s fairly normal in America for a good coffee shop to have several blends of beans to choose from, we’ve found that this isn’t as common in Italy. However, Ammazza Caffé has variety in spades. At the time of this writing, they have six different blends of beans to choose from on their menu. Three for espresso, and three for filter or drip coffee. My current favorite is their “Dulce – Kenya” blend, and since I’m very much a creature of habit, I tend to just stick to that. It has honey, nuts, and chocolate overtones, which hits all the noted of the types of espresso I generally like. So the coffee here checks out, and you certainly won’t be disappointed!

Other Drinks at Ammazza Caffé

But wait… there’s more! Ammazza Caffé is also somewhat locally famous for it’s great selection of other drinks. In fact, if you look at their google listing, their whole name specifically calls out their craft tonics. And I’ll be honest, historically I’ve never been a huge tonic kind of guy. However, I have absolutely been converted. Ammazza Caffé offers a few different specialty craft tonics, with some of them being seasonal, and there’s something so refreshing about sipping a rosemary and lemon-peel tonic after a macchiato in the afternoon.

Alcoholic drinks are also on the menu here from craft cocktails to some local Italian beers. And unfortunately, we can’t give you a proper review of those since neither of us drink. However, we’ve been assured by other patrons there that they are all very good, so we’ll pass on the praise of the local Veronese to you as a second hand endorsement!

The Food at Ammazza Caffé

I’ll go ahead and break this down into a couple little sections, because they offer plenty of different things to eat. Spoiler: Everything we’ve had is delicious. Besides the below categories, they also have rotating seasonal plates and some other things, but in our review we want to stick to what’s consistently there. I wouldn’t want us to write a glowing review about a dish, only for you to get there and it not be available any more!

The Toasts

Ammazza Caffé offers four different toasts right now: Peanut Butter, Hummus, Zucchini, and Pane e Panelle. All four are made on a nine seeds sourdough bread from a local bakery, Amao sapori oltre il pane located just a few minutes walk away. All the breads are delicious, and the Peanut Butter with strawberries and sunflower seeds is my favorite, while Rachel’s is the Hummus. I’m still very much an American when it comes to my breakfast, and I need protein and density in the morning to make it to lunch.

The Cakes

Of course, no Italian caffé is complete without some pastries or sweets, and Ammazza Caffé is somewhat known for the little cakes that it offers. While the cakes are good, the most notable thing about them is that they are vegan. While vegan food isn’t as rare as it used to be in Italy, in a culture famous for it’s meats and cheeses, it still isn’t exactly super common either. Certainly not nearly as popular as it is in the United States, and so offering vegan cakes is certainly something that stands out. Both Rachel & I both love the Peach & Basil cake the most here.

How’s the Vibe Inside?

So what is it like inside? I would best describe the vibe as “a welcoming coffee shop your friend is getting off the ground”. It’s not fancy or luxe, but instead it has a friendly type of style that immediately let’s you know that they aren’t pretentious, they’re here to serve great coffee and make you feel at home.

There’s plenty of seating, and they are very open to people bringing a laptop and hanging out for a while as a kind of co-working space, which isn’t as common in Italy as it is in the USA.

It’s also worth noting that in the evenings they frequently have small events that are free to attend! These range from coffee tastings, to book readings, and a whole host of things to do. Even on their website, they encourage people in the community to reach out if there is something they would like to host there and do! And that only adds to the vibe of the interior.

Where is the Ammazza Caffé?

Well… Verona, Italy, but you already knew that! More specifically it’s at Vicolo Volto Cittadella, 12/A, 37122 Verona VR, Italy, and you can tap that link to open up Google maps if you’re near by.

It has a great location. Really, a pretty perfect location. It’s just a couple minutes walk from Piazza Bra (the center of old-town Verona where the Verona Arena is located, if you’re not already familiar), but on a smaller side street which won’t be crowded by tourists. So conveniently located, but not overrun. Ammazza Caffé is also located next to two bus stops for easy access to public transit anywhere else you want to go to in Verona, and nearby nearly anything else you might need as well.

So in Summary, do we recommend Ammazza Caffé?

Absolutely! We had to do an Ammazza Caffé review because it’s currently our favorite caffé in Verona. With delicious coffee, great food, the ability to work remotely there (while still being close to the historic part of Verona), all puts Ammazza Caffé over the top for us. The staff is friendly and the owners are proud of what they’re doing, and so are we. We’re happy to support Ammazza Caffé as long as they are around!
