The Great Italian Opera premiers June 7 in Verona

If you’re going to be in Verona on June 7th, 2024, check out the premiering global event “La Grande Opera Italiana Patrimonio dell’Umanità” (The Great Italian Opera, World Heritage), promoted by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Fondazione Arena di Verona. This event celebrates the recognition of Italian opera singing as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, at the famous Verona Arena, a UNESCO heritage site. It will feature 150 orchestra professors and over 300 chorus artists from all the Italian lyric-symphonic foundations, with Maestro Riccardo Muti conducting.

The Opera Festival will open with Turandot, recorded by Rai Cultura and broadcast later on Rai3. This production will be directed by the young Michele Spotti, making his debut at the Arena, as will George Petrou for Barbiere di Siviglia and Leonardo Sini for Carmen. The opening night will feature the voices of Ekaterina Semenchuk (title role), Yusif Eyvazov (Il principe ignoto), and Mariangela Sicilia (Liù). The show will run from June 8th to June 29th.

The Arena di Verona Opera Festival will host fifty events from June 7th to September 7th, including three titles dedicated to Giacomo Puccini in honor of the centenary of his death. Following Stefano Poda’s spectacular futuristic Aida from last summer, the 101st season will commence with Franco Zeffirelli’s magnificent Turandot on June 8th at 9:30 PM. Other highlights include Tosca, with Anna Netrebko performing this role for the first time at the Arena in Hugo De Ana’s historic ‘noir’ production, and a new production of La Bohème by Alfonso Signorini, making its debut in the Amphitheatre. These are the three masterpieces by the Lucca composer to be staged in the 2024 edition.

Showtimes and Tickets

Tickets are priced the same as 2023 and are already available online, on the Arena’s social media channels, and through Ticketone. Discounts are available for under 30 and over 65 year olds.
